The song was a direct confession and show of utmost respect from Toby Keith to Willie Nelson. In the blog about legendary Willie Nelson, our last post is about how Willie Nelson came up in the songs of other country legends.

Song: I'll never smoke weed with Willie again
Singer: Toby Keith and Scotty Emrick
Album: Shock'n Y'all (2003)

Like every other country musician, Willie Nelson is a god-like figure to Toby Keith. So singing about Willie was not really a surprise, as he did on more than one occasion. What makes this one unique is that it was based on true story and from an almost tag line of Willie's legendary travel bus. As Keith puts it in an in interview Songfacts, "I've never stepped on Willie's bus without hearing someone say the words to this song: 'I will never smoke weed with Willie again.' "

As it happens, Toby himself was in a similar situation. On an off night, Toby went to meet Willie and ended up smoking. According to Toby, Willie out smoked him and thus came the confession.

But the most important part of the song was the high regard and respect shown to Willie Nelson. The same can be seen in the songs like "What would Willie do" -by Gary Allan, "My kind of music" -by Ray Scott, "Watchin Willie's hands" -by Tommy Alversion.
